What is Spanish Leather?

The story goes that in 1781 the English King George III was so taken with the smell of perfumed leather gloves created by his personal glovemaker James Creed that he asked Creed to create a perfume based on the scented leather.

The resulting scent, Royal English Leather, launched one of the most storied perfume houses in modern fragrance history and the “Leather” fragrance category. Leather perfumes are a unique fantasy category in that leather does have a real scent (a mix of the hide and fragrant oils used to offset scents from the tanning process), but leather perfumes do not have any materials derived from leather.

Leather scents in perfumery are based on complex blends of birch tar, tea, saffron, castoreum, and aromachemicals such as 6-methyl quinoline and other quinolines. Leather notes are incorporated into a broad variety of styles, including chypres, tobacco, amber, and gourmand. Leather as a category usually refers to a narrative in which leather plays an important role, such as the leather of a saddle.

Why Spanish Leather Is the Right Scent for You

Taurus and Virgo are earth signs, leading those born under them to have a deep connection with grounding, earthy scents at the core of the leather accord. Those under Taurus, the Bull, are likely to have an appreciation for finer things and sensual products, such as fine leather. Virgo is associated with agriculture and related scents, from the boots of the farmer and rancher to the saddle and tack on the horse. Those under Virgo are often crafters or makers who may celebrate the smell of finely worked leather.

You may be carefree, but are more likely to be serious, diligent, and caring. Setting explicit expectations for a promising relationship is more your style than jumping in and figuring things out later. Whiskey is a dessert food.

Your seriousness has an adventurous side, leading to Puerto Plata in the Caribbean or the ruins in Petra, Jordan. If you are interested in wearing a leather perfume, then, of course, happiness smells like a horse and sexy smells just as animalic, the lumberjack, a sweaty dance floor, the shared cigarette.

If you were a leading lady, Melissa McCarthy in The Heat is an easy call. Lady Gaga in A Star is Born intriguing, and Lupita Nyong’o in a leather dress in Black Panther iconic.

You may be considering the merits of your leather perfume while drinking a steaming cup of black coffee, a refreshing IPA, or an Old fashioned to wind down the day.
